The Tallaght Driving Test Centre is in Premier Business Park, 52 Broomhill Road, D24 VE8E, a few minutes from The Square. The routes off it throw a lot at you early: parked-up side roads, busy junctions and roundabouts where the lane choice matters from the first second.
That's why we'd rather you came in ready. Test waits here ran long through 2025, around 35 weeks at one point, so a date is too valuable to walk into half-prepared. A pretest lesson is how you make sure the date you waited for is the one you pass on.
The roads you'll meet on a Tallaght route
We won't pretend to know the exact route. Nobody can, and the testers change them. What we do is keep up with the routes in favour at the moment, so we've a fair idea where they tend to go. That's never a promise, but it's a long way from guessing. We drive these roads every day. Belgard Road and its junctions. Greenhills Road past TU Dublin, where the footpaths are never quiet. Old Bawn Road, narrow where the cars park both sides.
Then the estates: Kilnamanagh, Tymon North, Jobstown and Kingswood, with their speed bumps and their tight turns. A pretest hour puts you on that kind of ground so none of it is new when the tester says turn left.

You hang back at an amber you could have read sooner, drift across the lane, or roll into the yellow box at Cookstown Way with no clear exit. All three cost you here.
Read the lights early so amber isn't a surprise. Hold your lane. Never enter the box unless the way out is already clear.
Faults are graded one to three. Grade 1 is minor, Grade 2 is serious, Grade 3 is dangerous and fails the test on the spot. One Grade 3 is enough to fail. Too many Grade 2 faults fails it too.

Once your EDT lessons are done and you feel close to test-ready, the pretest is the dress rehearsal. The instructor runs you on test-centre-style routes for the hour and marks you to the same RSA grades the tester uses. No coaching mid-drive. You drive it like the real thing.
Then we stop and go through it. Every fault, where it happened, why it cost you, and we run the weak manoeuvres again until they're right. The reverse around the corner, the hill start, the lane on the roundabout, whatever the sheet flagged. You leave knowing exactly what to tidy before the day.
What you need with you on the day
Turn up short of any of these and the tester can't run the test, date gone. We run a final check on all of it before you go.
- Your valid learner permit, in the right category for the car.
- Your EDT logbook, with all 12 lessons completed and signed off.
- A roadworthy car with L-plates front and rear, clearly displayed.
- Motor tax paid and the disc shown where it applies.
- Valid insurance, and the NCT disc displayed where the car needs one.
- From 9 March 2026, a valid certificate of insurance showing you're covered to drive the test car. If your name isn't on the policy, bring a letter from the insurer confirming you're covered.
Use our car and most of this is sorted for you. It's roadworthy, taxed, insured and plated, so you arrive with one less thing to worry about.
Two things that have to be true first
You must have held your first learner permit for at least six months before the test date. That clock runs whether or not your lessons are finished, so it's worth starting early.
And all 12 EDT lessons have to be completed, with the logbook to show for it on the day. We time the pretest hour to land once both of those are squared away, not before.
