Getting Started with Driving Lessons in Tallaght

New to driving in Tallaght? Learner permit, theory test, your first lesson and EDT explained in plain steps. Start with RSA School of Motoring.

Step one: your learner permit

If you're starting from scratch, here's how it fits together. First the theory test, then your Category B learner permit, then the 12 EDT lessons you need before you can sit the driving test. You'll need the permit in hand before your first lesson with us.

Step two: the theory test

The theory test comes before the permit. It's a computer-based test on the rules of the road and hazard awareness, and you can sit it at 16. Get it done early and the permit application is the next quick step.

Step three: your first driving lesson

We start somewhere quiet. The side streets near Tymon Park on the Templeogue side are a calm place to get the basics, away from the town-centre traffic. From there we build up to the real thing: lane discipline on Belgard Road, the roundabouts near The Square, and the Old Bawn Road stretches where judging gaps is the whole skill.

Step four: your 12 EDT lessons

Once you're moving, the 12 EDT lessons give the learning a structure. Each is signed off in your logbook as you go. You can do them in a manual or an automatic car, whichever suits you.

Step five: practice hours and pretest

Between lessons you practise with a sponsor driver who has held a full licence for two years or more. That's how the lessons stick. Before the test we run a pretest hour on the kind of roads the Tallaght routes use, off Broomhill Road near The Square.

What your first lesson in Tallaght is like

A lot of first-time learners with us are local, off the Old Bawn or Jobstown side, walking to The Square for the Luas. Others are students fitting lessons around lectures at the TU Dublin campus on Greenhills Road. Either way, we pick up close to where you are. Nervous about the cost? See the driving lessons Tallaght prices first, so you know what you're booking.

Questions, answered

You can apply for a Category B learner permit and start lessons at 17. You can sit the theory test before that, so a lot of learners have it done by the time their permit comes through.

Yes. You sit the theory test first, then apply for a Category B learner permit, and then you can start your EDT lessons with us. We'll talk you through it before you book anything.

We start somewhere quiet, like the side streets near Tymon Park on the Templeogue side, away from the town-centre traffic. You get the controls and a feel for the car before we build up to the busier roads.

Plan on a few months. You hold your first permit for at least six months before the test, do your 12 EDT lessons, and practise in between. We'd rather you needed fewer lessons, so every hour counts toward the test.

There is no fixed number set in law, but the more supervised practice the better. A sponsor driver who has held a full licence for two years or more can sit with you between EDT lessons around Tallaght.
