Driver theory test
This comes first. The theory test is 40 multiple-choice questions on the rules of the road, and you need 35 right to pass. There's no minimum age to sit it, so plenty of learners get it done early.

First learner permit
With the theory test passed, you apply for a Category B learner permit. You'll need your theory pass, an eyesight report and your ID. You can hold a permit from 17, and a first one lasts two years.
Your first lesson
Permit in hand, we start somewhere quiet, the side streets near Tymon Park on the Templeogue side, away from the town-centre traffic. The controls and a feel for the car first, then we build up.

Your 12 EDT lessons
The 12 Essential Driver Training lessons give the learning its structure, recorded in your logbook as you go. You can do them in a manual or an automatic car, whichever suits.
Practice & the 6 months
Between lessons you practise with a sponsor driver who has held a full licence two years or more. That's how it sticks. You also hold your first permit six months before you can sit the test, so the two line up.
Pretest hour
Before the day, an hour on the kind of roads the Tallaght routes use, off Broomhill Road near The Square. It pulls everything together.
The driving test
You book the test through the Road Safety Authority. Bring your permit, your logbook and a car that's taxed, insured and roadworthy, with L-plates front and rear. Then it's the roads you've been driving all along.

The theory test comes before everything else, and there's no minimum age to sit it. Get it done early and the permit is the next quick step, so you're not waiting on it later.

What age can I start driving lessons in Ireland? +
You can hold a Category B learner permit and start lessons at 17. You can sit the theory test before then, since there's no minimum age to sit it, so a lot of learners have it done by the time their permit comes through.
Do I need a learner permit before my first lesson? +
Yes. You sit the theory test first, then apply for a Category B learner permit, and then you can start your EDT lessons with us. We'll talk you through it before you book anything.

Plan on a few months. You hold your first permit for at least six months before the test, do your 12 EDT lessons, and practise in between. We'd rather you needed fewer lessons, so every hour counts toward the test.
How many practice hours do I need with a sponsor driver? +
There's no fixed number set in law, but the more supervised practice the better. A sponsor driver who has held a full licence for two years or more can sit with you between EDT lessons around Tallaght.
