What Essential Driver Training covers
EDT means Essential Driver Training. It's the 12 one-hour lessons every learner has to do before sitting the driving test, set by the Road Safety Authority. You need a Category B learner permit before you start, and an RSA approved instructor to teach them. That's us.
How many EDT lessons you need: the 12 explained
All 12 EDT lessons are mandatory and each follows a set syllabus, from car controls through to anticipation in traffic. We teach them on the roads around Tallaght, not somewhere quiet that won't prepare you. You'll work the Belgard Road junctions, the lane discipline near the TU Dublin campus on Greenhills Road, and the Old Bawn Road stretches where parked cars narrow the road. Your logbook gets signed off lesson by lesson.
Pretest lessons after your EDT
The point of the 12 lessons isn't to tick a box. It's to make the skills automatic before the test, so lane choice, signalling and judging gaps stop feeling like decisions. The Tallaght test centre is in Premier Business Park on Broomhill Road, a few minutes from The Square, and a pretest hour on the kind of roads its routes use ties it all together.
EDT in a manual or automatic car
You can do your 12 EDT lessons in a manual or an automatic car. If the clutch is the part holding you back, an automatic frees your attention for observation and lane choice. The logbook is signed off the same way either way.
Booking your EDT lessons in Tallaght
Between lessons you can practise with a sponsor driver, as long as they've held a full licence for two years or more. That's how the 12 lessons stick. Tell us your area around Tallaght and we'll get you started. See the driving lessons Tallaght prices for the EDT course rate.

Questions, answered
Twelve. Essential Driver Training is the 12 mandatory one-hour lessons every learner does before sitting the driving test, set by the Road Safety Authority. You need a Category B learner permit to start them.
There is no fixed timetable. Most learners spread the 12 lessons over a few months, with practice in between, so each one builds on the last around the Tallaght roads.
The 12 are the minimum the law sets, not a guarantee. Many learners add a few pretest hours before the test. We'd rather you needed fewer lessons, so every hour counts toward the test.
Yes. The 12 EDT lessons can be done in an automatic, taught on the same Tallaght roads, with your logbook signed off as you go. The automatic course costs a little more than the manual one, and both rates are on the pricing page.
You must hold your first learner permit for at least six months before you can sit the driving test, whether or not your EDT is finished. We time the lessons and the pretest hour around that.
