The reduced EDT in Tallaght, explained
Fewer than twelve lessons, for the few who qualify, and what it means in Tallaght.
Most learners around Tallaght do the twelve EDT lessons that run over months, and that number is fixed by law. You may have heard someone at The Square mention a reduced course, six lessons instead of twelve, and wondered if it applies to you. For nearly everyone the answer is no. The reduced EDT is a narrow scheme, and it helps to know exactly who it is for before you get your hopes up.
Here is the short version. Reduced EDT lets you do six lessons instead of twelve, and it lifts the rule that makes you wait six months before the test at the Broomhill Road centre. It exists for one group only: people who already hold a full foreign driving licence that cannot simply be swapped for an Irish one. If that is not you, you are doing the full twelve, same as the rest of us around Tallaght.
Who actually qualifies
To get the reduced course you have to tick every box, not just one, and we meet plenty of would-be learners around Tallaght who clear four of them and miss the fifth. You hold an Irish learner permit. You hold a full foreign driving licence from a country Ireland does not have an exchange deal with. You held that foreign licence for at least two years before your Irish learner permit was issued. You are resident in Ireland. And that foreign licence cannot be expired by more than six months when you apply.
The two-year point trips people up most. It is two years before the permit was issued, not two years of holding the permit. So someone who moved to Kilnamanagh last year with a long-held licence from home may well qualify, while a neighbour off Greenhills Road who only started driving abroad recently will not. Who does not, and why
If you are a first-time learner, the reduced EDT is not for you. There is no shorter course for someone learning to drive for the first time, no matter how quickly you pick it up around Tymon North or out on Old Bawn Road. The scheme is there to credit real driving experience you already hold on a full licence, so a fresh learner permit on its own does not open the door.
Drivers from countries Ireland recognises do not need it either. If your country has an exchange agreement, you swap your licence directly and skip lessons altogether. The reduced EDT sits in the gap between those two: a full licence, real experience, but from a place with no swap deal. That is a smaller group than people expect.
How the reduced course is decided
You do not decide this, and neither does a school. You apply to the National Driver Licence Service by post, sending the form with a colour copy of both sides of your foreign licence and a letter of entitlement. They check the dates and the country, then come back with one of three answers.
Approved for the full reduced EDT means six lessons and no six-month wait. Approved for the exemption only means you still do all twelve lessons, but you skip the wait before the test. Not approved means the standard twelve lessons and the full six-month rule, like any other learner off Old Bawn Road. What it does not change
Six lessons or twelve, the lessons themselves are the same RSA-approved sessions, taught on the same roads. You will still work the Belgard Road junctions until lane choice feels automatic, and still learn the gaps on Old Bawn Road where cars park both sides. The logbook is still signed off as you go, and the test at the Broomhill Road centre is exactly the same test.
So the reduced EDT shortens the course and skips a wait. It does not shorten the standards on the roads around Tymon Park.
